T.R. Doongaji hails from Nagpur, the place where Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata started his first venture, Empress Mills, in 1877. At the age of 6-years-old, his cousin would take him to the fire temple where, before entering the premises, he'd request him to make a gesture to a statue that was of "the founder" placed on a pedestal. "I did what he asked me to," Says Doongaji. "Today, I realise that my entire identity is this name." A J.N. Tata academic, he worked for 52 years (42 as an executive) with Tata Group as well as managing director of three Group companies.Jamsetji created a provisional scheme for his employees, which was the first of this type in India and also an accident compensation fund.Ratan Tata spearheaded the group's global endeavors. This was not only about the big-bang acquisitions, but also a well-thought-out expansion leveraging the group's strengths.

In the past certain politicians in Nagpur would like to change the name of Nagpur's convocation hall of Nagpur University, the J.N. Tata Hall, to a local leader's name. A friend from Nagpur called Doongaji, asking whether he had any information about the hall. Doongaji delved into archives of the Tata Central Archives to see how the hall got the name. "We discovered an indication that Empress Mills Nagpur had contributed towards the cost of the hall and we had the complete record. We won the matter in High Court. I will not allow anybody to use Tata's names or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Property">property</a>," is her proud Parsi.

A few businesses can boast this kind of trust from their staff. It is also, Doongaji attributes it to the leadership in the Tata Group. Tata Group. "Between the founder and Cyrus [Mistry], there have been four chairmen--three were knighted and one is a Bharat Ratna," Doongaji says. Doongaji. "How many organizations can boast of that quality of leadership?

The whole thing began when Jamsetji bought a ten-acre parcel of marshy land from the Nagpur King and set up Empress Mills. (It was established as a company in Bombay in 1874 under the name of Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company Limited. Jamsetji had established trading company in 1868.)

Jamsetji was not keen on his employees to work in the filthy conditions were seen in Lancashire's cotton mills. Therefore when he was at Empress Mills, he ensured adequate ventilation and put in an apparatus set up to humidify air. Sprinklers were put in place to minimize the destruction caused by accidental fires. He also established a scheme to provident funds which was the first of its kind in India and also an accident compensation fund for accidents.

When Jamsetji came back to Bombay, he had made enough money and he turned his attention to purchasing property. In the next few years, he was one of the wealthiest men in the country. On a trip to the US, at the behest by industrialist George Westinghouse, Jamsetji saw the hydroelectric development at Niagara Falls. Jamsetji had been planning a hydroelectric project in India and the visit set in the final decision. Within the Lonavala and Khandala regions of the Western Ghats, which gets one of the largest rainfalls worldwide and has the proper kind of soils, valleys and slopes, he started the work of the Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company. Massive pipes pushed water to the bottom of the mountain at Khopoli and, at the power house it was converted to electrical energy. This venture proved to be an exciting development, as it supplied electricity to the city that was growing in Bombay.

Tata Hydroelectric Supply Company was established as a public company on the 7th of November October, 1910. The company was officially launched on February 11, 1915, when Lord Willingdon Governor of Bombay, inaugurated it. "Today, the major chunk of our power is being supplied to industries, hospitals and residences," declares Rajesh G. Naik, head of maintenance and operations at Tata Power. The power plant's capacity is 447MW.

The most popular feature of the project is the 14-acre gardens located in Lonavala. Jamsetji took an interest in gardens, and he brought home plants and seeds from all over the world. As the steel plant in Jamshedpur was in the process of being built in the early 1990s, he wrote an extensive note to his son Dorabji, on the fast-growing number of trees would like him to establish on the property. Said Vivek Vishwasrao, head of biodiversity at Tata Power: "We fall into the northern part of the Western Ghats which is a major bio-diversity hotspot. Certain species of animals, plants and birds that are found here are not found anywhere in the world." Jamsetji used to be known as an "omnivorous reader", and was a lover of Dickens and Thackeray. "He loved driving, a keen judge of horseflesh, and was proud of his well-bred Arabs, English Hackneys or Hungarians as well as his clever turnout. Sometimes, he was a fan of boating and sailing and entertaining his friends at picnic parties," writes Frank Harris in his book Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata: A Memoir of His Life.

In the realm of 'firsts but, Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy's achievements stick out. From getting India's first pilot's license to establishing the first cancer center in the country, J.R.D. Tata planted the seeds of the development of India. The father of his son, R.D. Tata was a nephew of Jamsetji's mother, and her mother was Suzanne Briere, a French citizen. He was born in Paris and spent his childhood in France. After his father's passing, he succeeded him to become a director of Tata Sons at the age of 22.

J.R.D. became J.R.D. Tata Sons chairman in 1938, at the age of 34 years old. The group was comprised of 14 companies in the beginning. When he left in 1991 it was 95. However, his contributions extended far further than Tata Group and its businesses. For example, he was instrumental in helping Homi Bhabha create India's Atomic Energy Programme. The brightest star of the businesses that J.R.D. started was Tata Airlines (which later became Air India), as it quickly gained a worldwide reputation as one of the best carriers. "J.R.D. was always saying that Air India was his first love, and I would hope that he'd say that Tata Steel was his second," says J.J. Irani, the former chief executive officer of Tata Steel. "He would laugh at that, but he never gave me an answer."
